Ecological genomics and conservation in southern Africa

The von der Heyden lab, led by PI Sophie von der Heyden, is a research laboratory based at the southern tip of Africa. We utilise genetic and genomic approaches for studying various aspects of marine and freshwater systems in Africa and beyond, but have a strong emphasis on using molecular techniques for conservation and biodiversity planning. Our work is wide and varied and we are not confined to particular taxonomic groups, but have worked on everything from sea grasses and urchins to great white sharks and fur seals (and the biodiversity of the Okavango!). This allows us to explore the dynamic and changing aquascapes that we are privileged to call home.

Our lab strives to be a safe and inclusive space for diversity in the marine sciences and STEM. Black Lives Matter.
